Standards and Frameworks:

1SC-E3. Organize and present data gathered from their own

experiences, using appropriate mathematical analyses and

graphical representations

P0 1. Construct a representation of data (e.g., histogram,

stem-and-leaf plot, scatter plot, circle graph, flow chart)

P0 2. Interpret patterns in collected data

1SC-E4. Identify and refine questions from previous investigations

P0 1. Analyze the results of previous investigations

P0 2. Refine hypotheses from a previous investigation

P0 2. Describe  a recent scientific event that has impacted the quality of life

3SC-E2. Develop and use a systematic approach to analyze the

risks associated with natural and biological hazards

Objectives

1. ) Identify and summarize evidence and use the evidence to support a suggested course of action.

2.) Use evidence to infer cause.

3.) Build on the development of an operational understanding of epidemiology.

Procedures

1.) Three different days in a one-on-one computer lab environment.

2.) Internet tips given on the more interactive sites:

A.)How Lou Got the Flu

B.) Cells Alive Cancer Cell Cam: (click on table of contents, Cell Cam, then Cancer

Cam) This site will not allow a direct link.)

C.) Virtual Microscopes: Ibuprofen/Dust Mite

D.) Microbes in the House

3.) Works better as an extension of previous work with epidemiology and vaccines.

Assessment

Student handout assessed:

Part I: Check the labeling and drawing of microbe: dust mite on virtual microscope. Pay extra attention that when finding the 6 different microbes in the house picture that there truly are six distinctly different microbes detailed. On the last question of microbes around the world and the common features they have we are looking for classification and categorization skills developing.

Part II: The graphing of the growth of cancer cell specifically. Accurate treatment of the flu.

Part Ill: Correct reading of directions and the labeling of the bacterial culture graph.

Composting jingle based on scientific evidence presented in a persuasive manner.
