Columbus Day Scavenger Hunt

Lesson 1

Objectives

Academic

Students will bedorne aware of the reasons for cele-brating ColUmbus Day.

Students will learn who Christopher ColumbUs was, how- he came to

America, why he came, who- came- with him, what he found when he got to

different places in America.

The students-- will use multiplication to find out the miles Colurn~us

traveled.

The stud-ent will learn who Queen Elizabeth was.

The students will look at maps to find the places Columbus traveled.

Students wilL get to buddy read with partners in their second language.

 

•Technology

Student will- practice or refine typing URLs.

Student will practice scrolling down screen to- read and find pict~tres.

Student will learn how- to print Internet sites.

Students wilt use Internet as a-resource for research-on a topic.

 

Pre-Requisite Technology Skills

Students need to be aware of- the letter keys and the functions of su~h as delete, return arrows, shifI~ etc.

 

Materials

ColUmbus Day Scavenger Hunt Sheet

Copies of small book, Discovery Travels Spanish if ifs Spanish day or English if it is English day.

Procedures

1) Children should have a discussiOn about what Columbus Day means to them prior to going to computer lab. Teacher then sees what knowledge the children bring with them to- their assignment

2) in the- lab the children are- given an instructions about the lesson. They are shown (before handing out) the sheet with the URLs and the

- questions pertaining to each site.

Explain they are to- type the URL very accurately to be able to fincj the scavenger hunt sites.

 

Explain they can read the questions for each site prior to going ir~to each site to give them a better focus as to what they are looking for. Warn them not to read all of theim at once. Only site per site. Explain they should read the- questions carefully and before they write their response they should share their ideas with their partner.

3) After questions concerning the instructions are taken care of, hand out the

scavenger hunt and have-them turn their computer on and click on either

browse the internet (a globe icon). or ‘Netscape (lighthouse icon).

4) Have students type the first URL and continue with the rest as they finish

with each site’s questions~

5)- The last site is a picture of Columbus they are to’ print. Explain to File and

scroll down to the “print”.

6) They will use this as the cover to their report.

7) Review questions with students

8) Students write a report using the information they learned from their

reading and comprehension questions. Review the 6 traits if they have L~een

all taught or focus on the one class is wooing om

9) Students buddy up to read the Discovery books and color the pictures.

 

Assessment

As a group go over the’ questions so children can compare answers and evaluate if they are right, and why or why not. Teacher observes for those students that show knowledge of having read- the material. Otherr recall questions can be asked to further evahate.

Students should successfully have printed out the picture of Columbus. Students are to write a report with information they learned. - Teacher may grade according to the benehm~irks
