Ask Jeeves About Animal Sounds

Objectives:

Academic:

Students will be able to follow the teacher's directions, read directions at the site, and discover the sounds

that various animals make and why they make them.

Technological:

Standard 1

Pre-Requisite Technology:

Students should be familiar with basic technology skills such as using the mouse, keyboard, technology

vocabulary, and URLs.

Materials:

1. Computer with Internet access.

2. URL site http://www.askieeves4kids.com.

3. Handout of questions for students to answer and for group discussion.

Procedure:

1. Before doing this activity, brainstorm and discuss the reasons why animals make sounds.

2. Go through the handout of questions that students are expected to answer and discuss at the end of the

lesson. Also write a student-generated list of animal names on the board for them to refer to for

spelling.

3. Open the browser to the Internet and type the URL http://www.askJeeves4kids.com.

4. Type the question: What sound do penguins make?, then click on ASK. You will see a few different

questions on the screen. Click on ASK next to the question that says: Where can I hear the animal

pengfiin?

5. You will see a picture of penguins. Click on the blue word LISTEN to hear them making sounds.

6. When you are finished listening to penguins, click on the red word EXIT under the picture to go to the

next animal.

7. Keep repeating these steps to hear the sounds that various animals make.

8. Click on the word MAP and you will see a map of the world with numbers on it. Click on a number to

see pictures and hear sounds of animals from that country. There are 14 numbers to click on.

9. Get into teacher-assigned pairs to go through the handouts. Discuss the questions and write the

answers.

10. Share the answers with the large group and have fun making lots of animal sounds.

Assessment:

Teacher will monitor and observe. Students will discuss and write their answers on the handout and share

with the whole group. Teacher will evaluate the handouts and participation.
