Procedures

Students read creation myths from the Internet and other resource books. Students discuss and graph the primary elements found in creation myths. They story map several of the myths. Students analyze the basic elements in the creation stories. This process can last several days or weeks depending on the skills of the students. Students are given a handout, which they use to write the rough draft of their myth as well as draw the pictures they will use to tell their story. After rough drafts have been reviewed and edited by the teacher, the students are ready for Kid Pix. On Kid Pix, they draw six pictures, then put the pictures together to create their creation myth slide show. The shows are played, using a projector, so the whole class can easily watch them.

Special Needs

This activity is great for my ESL and learning disabled students. They can read the creation myths with partners. I try to find readings that are at their level, so they can understand them. I also do a lot of paraphrasing and repetition. I usually pair a higher and lower reader.

Assessment

I will be listening to my students reading the myths aloud. I will also have them retell the stories in class, and discuss them. I will have them play their slide shows, and see what elements they were able to use.
