Activity for The Giver

Objectives:

Academic:

To actually compose a creative writing piece called "The Memory" at the keyboard with no pen or paper in sight.

Technological:

Students will need basic word processing skills to freewrite and then to use grammar/style checking to critically study the grammar and style of their writing and that of a partner. (AZ Technology Standard 1).

Materials:

Access to Microsoft Word

The Giver by Lois Lowry

Procedures:

After class discussion on the memories that the Giver gave to Jonas, students should pull up Microsoft word and begin to type a memory that they want to give Jonas.

They will type for 20 minutes and then trade computers with their partner. The partner will write a response to the previous student’s writing, using a different font. The process is repeated until the writing piece is finished.

Together they will use grammar/style check to revise both stories.

Assessment:

The assessment will be based on the Expository Writing Rubric for Amphi Middle School. It was written to judge paragraphs, but can be used for longer pieces.
