ALL "SORTS" OF NUMBERS

Objectives:

Academic:

• Students will use the attributes of numbers as a basis for classification.

Pre-Requisite:

Technology Skills: Access the Internet

Academic Skills: Knowledge of numbers and their different attributes, ability to use a Venn diagram for sorting by attribute

Materials: Access to the Internet, URL: http://www.educast.com/arc/lp/mth/9803307m.html. Number Sort activity sheets, one set per group (students may print from Internet Site, pages 35-38); blank activity sheets, several per group with extras available (page 39); pencils

Procedures:

Have each group tell about their experiences and discuss the process with the whole class. Ask such questions as these:

• How did you decide which numbers represented which attributes? Where did you look to make sure?
• What was the easiest part of this activity? The Hardest part?

Remember to use anecdotal record forms to keep a record of participation for each student for each activity.

Assessment: Evaluate cognitive skills by noting the case or difficulty students had in using the activity sheets and diagrams for the purpose of classifying the attributes of numbers.
