Comet Research
- Academic Objectives: 1) Students will research and report on current scientific comet projects.
- Technological Objective:
Students will locate a bookmarked web site, navigate within its links and print out a document. Standard 1.
Pre-requisite Technology Skills: Students need to know how to go to a bookmarked website access links at the site and print out a graphic and text.
Materials: Netscape Internet access,

Procedures:
Begin It
Use Averkey to show students how to get to Classroom Bookmarks, on the t.v. monitor. Then to Ms. Fairbanks, Math & Science link. Choose Where is Comet Wild-2? site.
Instruct students that they are to do research on the Internet on the topic of comets. The website they are to work from has been chosen for them but has many related links that will provide current information on the topic.
Tell students they are expected to produce a short report on comets, from the research they do. They will be allowed to print out a MAXIMUM of three pages of material for references, with at least one page of text.
Do It
- Allow 35-50 minutes for research, troubleshooting, and printing.
End it
- Students will use the data gathered to produce a short written report on comets. Attached to their written report, will be the reference material gleaned from the Internet.
Assessment
- The report will be rated from the 6-Traits Rubric; Ideas and content and Conventions.
- Extra credit will be given to students demonstrating higher levels of thinking and relevant affective statements.

PowerPoint Stardust Presentation
- Academic Objectives: Students will research a specific NASA comet project and produce a 5-10 slide presentation, and printed hard copy on their results.
- Technological Objective:
Students will locate a bookmarked web site, navigate within its links and produce a PowerPoint presentation. Standards 1 and 2.
Pre-requisite Technology Skills: Students need to know how to go to a bookmarked website access links at the site. Students need experience in creating a cover page and designing slides with PowerPoint software.
Materials: Netscape Internet access, http://stardust.jpl.nasa.gov/comets/ website
Procedures:
Begin It
- Use Averkey to show students how to get to Classroom Bookmarks, on the t.v. monitor. Then to Ms. Fairbanks, Math & Science link. Choose Where is Comet Wild-2? site.
- Instruct students that they are to use their previous research to produce a PowerPoint slide presentation.
Do It
- Tell students to click on the PowerPoint icon.
- They are to then choose the format they’d like to use for the title page.
- Next they are to locate the icon on the upper tool bar that has a little star in the corner and click on it to begin creating their series of slides.
- Students are to access the Stardust website for information to import to their slides.
- Students may also take advantage of animation and sound features available, to enhance their presentation.
- Allow 50 – 60 minutes for completion.
End it
- Students are to preview their presentation with two other students for constructive feedback before printing it out.
Assessment
- Presentations will be assessed on the quality and accuracy of information, variety of PowerPoint features used, as well as the level of interest demonstrated by their audience of peers.
