- MUSIC, GRADES 3 - 5
- TITLE: COMPOSING RHYTHMS WITH THE INTERNET
- OBJECTIVES
- ACADEMIC: The students will be able to compose and perform several rhythmic patterns in 4/4 time, using quarter notes, eighth notes, and half notes.
- TECHNOLOGICAL: The students will access the Internet to find a particular web site for relevant information.
- PRE-REQUISITE TECHNOLOGY SKILLS: 1) turn on computer; 2) gain access to Internet; 3) type in particular address; 4) follow directions at the site
- MATERIALS: A Hewlett Packard PC; Access to Netscape; Internet access; URL: http://www.orat.ilstu.edu/~kwfansle/ (Ken Fansler’s Online Music Instruction Page); URL: http://www.dsuper.net/~dax/rhythm/rhythm1.html (The Rhythm Book); handouts: see attached copy
- SPECIAL NEEDS:
- PROCEDURES:
- prior activities included echo-saying and echo-clapping various rhythms, in 4-beat patterns, using Kodaly syllables; other prior activities included echo-playing 4-beat rhythm patterns on various classroom instruments
- tell students that today they will be exploring rhythmic notation on the Internet
- divide class into small groups (2 or 3 to each computer)
- each group types in the addresses of web-sites given above and reads/listens to lessons on-line
- at the end of 20 minutes, each group returns to their own seats; in each group, students will compose 8 measures in 4/4 time (they may use eighth notes, quarter notes, and half notes for this exercise in composition)
- groups may practice their compositions quietly, if time allows
- each group may play their measures for the class, using classroom percussion instruments
- ASSESSMENT: Each group will hand in a copy of the rhythmic notation which they have composed (be sure that they write their names on the paper; each group will perform the rhythms which they composed
- PLAN B: (just in case there is no access to the web-sites on the day of this lesson)
- review the "sound" of each rhythm by echo-saying/clapping/playing 4-beat rhythms as a class
- go through written notation, using the chalkboard: write and perform each rhythm orally
- divide class into small groups, each with handout and pencils
- each group writes 8 measures in 4/4 time, practices the rhythms quietly, then performs them for the class, using classroom instruments
