Title: A Look at Renaissance Instruments

Objectives:

  1. Academic: The students will view and hear several instruments from the Renaissance Period, in preparation for a class discussion about the instruments.
  1. Technological: The students will follow directions on the Internet in order to see and hear different web pages.

Pre-Requisite Technological Skills: 1) turn on computer; 2) get on-line; 3) type in a URL

Materials: 1) a Hewlett Packard PC; 2)Netscape (or other access to Internet); 3) "RealAudio" Player; 4)headphones or speakers; 5) the URL is http://www.hike.te.chiba-u.ac.jp/cons1

Special Needs:

Procedures:

  1. Previous lessons may have included: 1)listening to a "modern" symphony orchestra; 2)listening to individual orchestral instruments, such as flute or violin; 3)listening to Renaissance compositions; 4)reading about/discussing Renaissance music, etc.
  2. Teacher tells students that today they will view Renaissance instruments and listen to their sound on the Internet; class is divided into small groups (2 or 3 students to each group) and assigned to a computer.
  3. Small groups turn on computer, get on-line, and type in the URL.
  4. Scroll down to "Instrumens" (this site is from Japan), and click on individual instruments (for example, Shawm, Bass Recorder, etc.), in order to view the instrument.
  5. Scroll down to "sound" and click on it to hear each instrument; click on "Open it" and "OK"; click "play" button to hear the instrument.
  6. Go "Back" to instrument page and click on next instrument; follow above directions to see and hear that instrument; groups will continue this way until they have heard all of the instruments at the website.
  7. Class discussion about the Renaissance instruments they have seen and heard. Possible topics might include: instrument appearance, comparison of sounds, which "modern" instrument families they might "resemble", any instruments which are still used today, etc.

Assessment: Anecdotal records of class discussion.

Plan B: Find some good pictures of different Renaissance instruments. Share them with the class. Share some recordings of Renaissance music which uses authentic instruments. Have a class discussion about the instruments.
