Lesson #1- A Computer Is Machine
Objectives
Students will observe the physical characteristics of a computer and compare computers with other machines people use.
Prerequisite Skills
None
Materials
A computer with printer and other machines for comparison ( i.e. blender, pencil sharpener, telephone, calculator, overhead projector).
Procedures
• Students will discuss the physical characteristics of a computer. What does it look like? (power switch, plug, buttons)
• Students will discuss the purpose of the computer. What does it do? (demonstrate briefly word processing, printing, internet location with photos)
• Students will compare and record on chartpaper the characteristics and purposes of computers and other machines.
• Teacher will demonstrate the function of a computer and the internet.
Assessment
Teacher will verbally question students asking them to summarize our findings.
Standards
Standard l Readiness (kindergarten)- identify a variety of machines at home and at school.
